The Great Hall was bathed in the early morning enchantments peering in through the tall windows; a soft light of sun-swept spring echoing around the dust cold walls, coupled by an April warmth that took out the last of the winter chill from its stone heavy bones. In the bright early sleep-after, the drunken grogginess hung just under the high ceiling of the hall, drinking in the clanking of dishes and hovering above the sleepy cheerful good-mornings exchanged between bites of toast and sips of tea.

The Ravenclaw table was by far the loudest, despite the dreamy spring-breeze atmosphere nesting in the arches above the hall, but that was to be expected from approximately 80 people all trying to be the smartest person in the room at the same time. Gryffindor table, where Tony had parked himself in a seat opposite of Trish that morning, came second only in its attempt to best its wrestling partner where obviously it lacked the necessary weight. Not counting Trish and Tony’s heated discussion, there were offenders arguing about Quidditch and otherwise miscreants howling with laughter over some nonsense or other, and one very particular dare from the far end in the form of an entire cauldron’s worth of porridge.

Hufflepuff came in as a close third, sharing their goodmornings in cheerful smiles and humming of some wordless tunes that got stuck in their heads while they were brushing their teeth. And though Slytherin certainly was not the quiet table, they did exercise a reserved sort of dignified silence only accented with polite conversation. They were the worst in the mornings, still stuck in some half-dream state and fighting off the siren call that invited them back between the warm sheets of their beds, but then Tony had been up since 4.

“I’m just saying,” he said, halfway through his third slice of tart and gesturing with his fork in a way that suggested he was not, in fact, just saying, “Le Doux has composition pinned down to the stroke. It’s balanced, it’s borderline obsessive balanced and then she overlays it with this- dramatic emotional canvas that should look out of place and chaotic but it doesn’t.” Following his latest encounter with notable witch artists, in the last week’s History of Magic class, Tony had looked into his materials and then immediately sought out Trish. She would have had covered the topic of Tarja Le Doux and her imitator-slash-copycat fanboy Frewin “Shadowsoul” Talbot last year, but for Tony it was a fresh point of subject and he trusted no one else to better discuss it with.

“Look I’m not saying Talbot didn’t have the right idea when he started following in her footsteps, but he could never enchant the paintings to move in the same way as Le Doux and that, I think, is when you truly notice the difference. It’s all wild and out of sorts. With Le Doux it’s trippy but it also makes a weird sort of sense.”
