It seemed like Gail always headed for the same place everyday after work. It was always to the edge of town, near the forest for her, to enjoy the fresh air, and at times, to wander through the trees without a care for where she went. Today, however, she sat at the base of a tree at the border, watching the village from the hill she had situated herself at. It was another quiet day, as it seemed every other had been, and it brought a suspicious feeling to mind. The Daily Prophet had led her to believe that Hogsmeade was a constant target for bad things to happen across. But since she got here, months ago, nothing ever seemed to happen. It was discouraging, as she had hoped to serve a purpose for these people, but by now they had gone back to their quiet, peaceful lives. It was selfish to see it the way Gail did, but really, if the Death Eaters weren't here, did that mean they were wreaking havoc elsewhere?

As she rested her head in her hand and squinted her eyes, the shadow of the leaves above her caught her attention as it swayed in the wind. She felt stuck, and wasn't sure where she was supposed to be. Surely working at a tea shop for the rest of her life wasn't all she was meant to do? She'd already rooted herself here in Hogsmeade, and as hard as it was to get a job for someone such as her, the idea of leaving was that much more difficult. Especially since this was the first time she'd settled somewhere for more than a week. Now she had to get used to seeing the same sights everyday; same streets, same job, same apartment. The list piled on in her head, and only resulted in a big hefty sigh.

Each step he strode along the border between the town of Hogsmeade and the forest diminished his anxiety. Derek knew that he probably should just have asked around Hogwarts first as to where they got all their ingredients and potions from for the Hospital Wing since the budget did not seem to allow for buying everything, especially all those potions. The thing was though, he wanted to make sure the supply was adequate without turning to potentially illegal transactions. Before he ran around asking staff members uncomfortable questions, he wanted to make sure that Nurse Detenae didn't collect the ingredients herself from the forest or nearby areas.
So here he was trudging through the grass and shrubs. As of now, Derek had spotted and collected a few common herbs native to the United Kingdom and a few that must have been shipped from overseas a long time ago and grown wild. That took care of a reasonable amount of the herbs at least. Not the rarer ones of course, but Derek imagined the Herbology Professor would sense nothing amiss if those were requested to by the Hospital Wing. But still, the sheer quantity of the potions which stocked the shelves of the Hospital Wing would have been impossible to make and still have enough herbs and ingredients left over for how much they had. Maybe a question with the Potions Professor... And the authorities could take care of Nurse Detenae's private supplies if she had any.

Yet it seemed he was not the only one taking a quiet afternoon stroll. Well, that wasn't completely accurate. The woman in question who shared his interest in the forest was standing still, staring rather unhappily at the leaves swaying above their heads.
"Are you alright?" Surely they didn't have such extreme cats that would try to climb up these behemoths of wood.

Gail shouldn't have given a jolt the way she had, but it happened either way, as her head whirled around to face the man. He was tall, and with a strong build, but also an alert look about him- appropriate for anyone who wandered around these particular woods. Seeing as he was standing, she felt it was better to join him, rather than just remain sitting, feeling sorry for herself. "I'm alright." She replied with a confirming nod. "I'm Gail- I don't think we've met?"

It might have sounded overly-friendly or social, but Gail had always been taught never to demand a name before giving her own. Her father never did it, and nor did she. She did think it was odd though, seeing someone come out from the woods instead of going in. Well, okay, either would be weird, but still.

The sudden turn the woman - Gail, he corrected himself as she introduced herself - startled him. Surely he hadn't been that quiet. Maybe he had interrupted some deep musings... Sincerely hoping that he hadn't, the Healer walked a bit closer to Gail so that they wouldn't have to call to each other to have a conversation.

"Derek. I don't think we have... I hope I didn't interrupt anything." his brow was a bit furrowed. The last thing he wanted to do was force someone into a conversation that they didn't want. While he liked meeting new people, he also knew that some had more important things to do then stand around and chat with some stranger who had just walked out of the woods. Oh damn, did she think he was a serial killer? That would be bad, very, very bad.
The tone with which she spoke didn't show that she thought he was about to grab and kill her though. That was good. Because he wasn't. Going to grab and kill her that was.

It must be because of this new investigation sort of thing that he was so antsy. He hadn't chosen to become a healer for this sort of thing, Derek mused sadly.

Had this man, Derek he mentioned, held any dark intentions, Gail certainly wasn't worried about it. She may have been a woman, but she wasn't all that tiny, and though her appearance may have said otherwise, she could handle herself with or without a wand. That confidence allowed her to befriend any strangers, where others would possibly flee, or avoid a conversation entirely. She remembered bumping into a traveler when she was just a fresh wolf; he'd been incredibly suspicious, face hidden in a red hooded cloak, and gadgets and gizmos all strapped to his belt and supply back. He had appeared ready to take on ten giants at once, but when she spoke to him, he had been quite friendly- good sense of humor as well.

Standing before Derek now, he was hardly as fearsome looking as the traveler had been, therefore Gail was only further assured that he would just be yet another acquaintance for her to make. She smiled, all brooding thoughts pushed aside as she laced her fingers together and gave a curt nod, "No worries! Any longer and I may have gotten lost in this thick head of mine." She chuckled as she lightly hit her knuckles against her skull.

She glanced down curiously at the bag he was carrying, and then back up to him, "So what are you doing out in the woods- well, particularly this one, I mean." There was rarely anyone but herself in this forest, as it was the very same one that met the grounds of Hogwarts. There were many dangerous creatures and plants hidden in the darkest corners of the woods, and not even Gail wandered too far in, for fear of getting lost- she could apparate, of course, but Gail rarely thought in such terms, and it was better not to take the risks unless she needed to.

He grinned at her jest and hoisted the strap of his bulky bag further up his shoulder, reasonably reassured that they hadn't gotten off on the wrong foot now. Not being entirely unaware of how he could look, Derek marveled that Gail didn't jump to the conclusion that he had something illegal in his bag. It had happened before. But at least this time he wasn't clad head-to-toe in protective garments with a bag full of poisonous plant clippings. The only thing that had gotten him out of trouble was when he showed the Aurors that the bag was a St Mungo's ingredient bag along with his card and letting them call his boss to verify his claim to have been gathering ingredients for some anesthesia potions. In fact, this bag was the very same one. It was funny how memories like that hit you sometimes.

Then again, maybe she was a bit suspicious - or maybe just curious - when she asked uncomfortably similar questions to what the Aurors had. Luckily, she hadn't reached the "what drug-trafficking ring are you part of?" or "DO YOU ENGAGE IN THE ILLEGAL TRADE OF HALLUCINOGENS!?" that their questioning had. Still, he was happy enough to answer her questions. If she was a local, she may even be able to help.

"Well I've mostly been gathering plant clippings to stock up the Hogwarts Hospital Wing. A couple things I'm going to send to St Mungo's to double-check the herb's species." The forbidden forest was far less foreboding than he remembered it being from his memories as a student. That didn't keep him from making sure his wand was easily accessible though.

"Oh, so you work at Hogwarts too? I met Professor Grace just a few weeks ago." The friendly smile was never missing from her face- it was a miracle her face hadn't become stuck like that after all this time of friendly cheer. "Are you a nurse- er, healer, then?" She quirked her eyebrow, embarrassed to have used such a feminine term. She'd just never actually met a male practice of healing voodoo and such before. Gail was always happy to meet practitioners of medicine, if that's what you called them; not many healers shied away from her, as they were educated to know that she was only as harmful as the next wizard when there wasn't a full moon.

Of course, those she had met looked at her like a germ through a microscope, but at least they didn't abruptly hate or fear her. It was a step up, as far as she was concerned. "Do healers and nurses at Hogwarts usually operate with St. Mungos? I'm not entirely familiar with the technical side of things."

The lively sounds of the forest momentarily distracted her, as she steered her gaze elsewhere for a spell. He must not have planned to go very deep into the woods, by the way he was dressed. He didn't have any sort of gear that indicated otherwise, after all. Yet he wound up here, clear on the other side of the forest. It was quite a marvel really- could he really just be an ordinary wizard? When she returned her attention back to him, she was looking at him in a new light. He must have been much more qualified than Gail had originally assumed.

If Derek hadn't skimmed the list of staff members after he had moved his equipment into the school, he would have been very much at a loss as to who Gail was talking about. This was one of those times when he was very happy to be well-practiced at scanning documents from his preparation for OWL exams. Even though it wasn't technically a skill that was marked by taking the exams, without it, he would have done far more poorly in his Arithmancy exam. To this day, he still didn't know what possessed him to take both Divinations and Arithmancy as electives in his third and fourth year. But back to the topic at hand, all he knew about Professor Grace was that he was the Herbology professor at Hogwarts. Staff etiquette at Hogwarts was vastly different to St Mungo's: he still hadn't figured out if booking a meeting was too formal and if just walking into an office was too informal. Perhaps a trip down to the staff room to introduce himself would be a good idea too.

"Both actually," he replied with equal cheer. "I'm a temporary fill for the position of Head Nurse at Hogwarts but I'm normally a full-time Healer at St Mungo's. We don't normally work with schools, but Headmistress Naer needed a qualified Healer to help and we offered to step in." Derek added the last bit by way of explanation. Valerie had also taught him to parrot a non-answer to the Press if they were to ask about his stance on Nurse Detenae's scandal, but that wasn't what Gail seemed to want. Besides, she didn't look or act anything like a journalist. As a matter of fact, he doubted that a reporter would stare up into space at the border of a forest.

Despite having emerged from the forest himself, he was a bit taken aback that someone looked as if they were about to enter. Gail didn't seem to have as specific a purpose as he had if her gazing was anything to go by. But who was he to tell someone to be careful if he just did what they were about to do. Derek just hoped that she would stick to the fringes of the forest and go around the dark center. He'd made sure not to get too close while plant-gathering and it was easy enough. You just had to stay away from where the shadows were darker than they should be and where you couldn't hear any animals about. Her stance was confident though and she seemed to know what she was doing. With that in mind, he was reasonably reassured.

"It's not a bad time to wander about there either. It's getting cold for mosquitoes but still warm enough not to freeze in your boots." the bag slid a bit on his shoulder so he put it down beside him and settled down to re-adjust the straps while checking nothing had fallen out. Some of his first-aid equipment was packed in there and Derek would really prefer not to lose it.

"Wow," escaped her before she'd even thought about it; definitely more qualified than she originally thought. It made her all the more curious still, as she wondered about his opinion on werewolves. But it was a habit of hers, not to mention it until an opportunity in the conversation permitted it, and one had not yet appeared.

"So you're getting a feel for your new workspace then, yeah?" She grinned as she cracked her knuckles absentmindedly. Gail couldn't help but think it was cool, being out here on business, rather than for fun, and well- necessity, in her case. Maybe this is what the life of a groundskeeper would be like. She did realize that Derek was only out here on the one occasion, but his presence brought thoughts of what she could be. Something more than a Tea shop employee.

All the talk of his exciting career (and not to mention the good weather conditions) got Gail eager to join in on the fun, so she looked up at him hopefully, "If you've still got some gathering to do, mind if I tag along? Maybe I could help!"

Hmm, maybe this was why the straps weren't as secure as they used to be: the stitches connecting the straps to the bag itself were wearing thin and beginning to tear. A wave of his wand repaired the stitches but this made him decide it was time to upgrade his bag. This bag-pack had been given to him when he was still a week-old rookie at St Mungo's and didn't have the pouches and attachments the new ones had. It always had been difficult in the past to keep vials from cracking and the new bag certainly was designed to help with that. Derek decided to flu with Valerie this evening - he needed to report his findings on the Hospital Wing to her as well as request a bag. He was brought out of his planning with Gail's 'wow'. It wasn't a very typical response for adults who heard about his work. Teens and children would often be impressed because of the sheer amount of work that went into becoming a healer, but people of Derek's age were settled in their jobs and few wanted to swap that for his late night shifts. Gail was certainly unique.

Having fixed his bag, he pulled the straps over his shoulders and adjusted them while he replied to her query.
"Definitely. It operates differently to St Mungo's and high-stress situations are few and far between. I'm actually a little worried I'm going to get rusty when the worst things I treat now are potions experiments gone wrong."

And at least the students here were smart enough - or maybe just supervised very well - not to drink foul concoctions that were clearly not fire protection potions. Most injuries in the Hospital Wing were caused by blunt trauma or boil break-outs from potions. No 30-hour shifts treating victims of complex dark magic or ministry workers with dangerous hallucinations. Working those cases made Derek have a momentary loss in faith for humanity until he saw his friends' and colleagues' tired but determined faces, healing and healing until the patient had some semblance of health and peace. Then, a fierce relief and joy would grip everyone in the ward when they could see the smooth and even movements of a patient's chest and know that one more person would heal and be given another chance to live. Derek missed having that.

His blue eyes crinkled at the corners as he gave a laugh of pleasant surprise, "Not at all! There's a stretch of forest that I haven't gone through yet and it would be great to have a local with me."
He'd essentially finished going through the darker regions of the forest that he was comfortable venturing into and the stretch of forest on the other side of the center would take him days to go through thoroughly. Derek had alternated mostly between the border of the darker forest and the fringe of the trees the lead to fields of tall grass so the bit of forest between the two was mostly untouched by him. Originally he'd planned to return another day, but now that he had a companion, he was more comfortable with spending more time in the Forbidden Forest.

Gail could certainly understand how he might fall out of practice working at a school for awhile. It wasn't likely students would seriously get injured on a regular basis, which, although was a good thing, would make things challenging when Derek headed back to St. Mungos. It was like an Auror going on vacation for a year.

She pulled herself out of her thoughts however, as Derek gladly accepted her help, and she smiled and stepped forward, looking all around at the trees surrounding them. She found it odd, having Derek consider her a local. Gail hadn't lived here her whole life or anything, but she supposed she'd been her long enough to be considered a resident; she'd even started renting an upstairs room from a lovely couple in town. Perhaps that wasn't permanent, but she was trying. And she definitely knew these woods enough to be of proper use to the healer.

Feeling self-assured, Gail gave herself a quick nod before turning back to Derek once again, "Which way then?" She gave another of her wide grins, as she thought back to what sort of plants she may have seen with her own eyes when she came into the forest. She could recall a rather nasty looking plant that squirmed a lot and looked like it would explode from a mere prod. Maybe that would interest him. She wasn't entirely sure what the plant had been, however- she didn't remember much from Herbology classes, but it did look potent.

"Back into the forest, of course." Derek threw out a little tease before basically walking back in from where he came out before turning at a slight angle to head further north. They were trekking through the forest at a a diagonal of sorts now. It would keep them away from the center but take them away from the fringe of the woods where he had already scoured through for plants and other ingredients.

Soon enough, they came upon a cluster of Asphodel, a Baneberry bush and some light brown mushrooms that grew out of the side of a tree. The Healer set down his bag and put on some gardening gloves before taking some clippings of each. It wasn't time-consuming and like watching paint dry, but it wasn't exactly adrenaline inducing either. He preferred it that way too. When taking samples of plants causes your survival instinct to kick in, it is time to get out of there.

"Gathering ingredients is a tougher than going to Diagon Alley, but I like strolling in forests and countryside from time to time." Gail probably enjoyed the outdoors too if her request to go into the Forbidden Forest with him was anything to go by. And despite knowing they shared that interest at least, it didn't seem right to work in silence when he had a companion.

She grinned as he headed in, and she quickly followed after him. At first she kept a few paces behind him, as her gaze darted around like an excited dog, alert and ready for something to cross their path. The weather was just as decent as he had said, and their were few bugs in the air. When she went camping, she always tried to go somewhere cold. She'd rather be freezing her toes off then getting eaten alive by elusive mosquitoes.

As he stopped to pick some plants, Gail took a moment to look up at the trees. She spotted a little gray squirrel watching the with keen beady eyes. The forest was just as curious about them as they- well, Gail, was curious about the forest.

"It's certainly a refreshing change of scenery," Gail agreed, "How often do you have to prepare your own potions at St. Mungos?"

Each sprig and bushel was labelled with conjured tags with various scribbles of his own hand-writing. He was curious about the mushrooms he'd found, unsure as to whether they were just a breed of common mushrooms or Staghorn mushrooms. The near illegible label noted 'send sample to mum'. It was too small a thing to trifle St Mungo's with but could mean a nice crop of ingredients for healing potions at a later date. Another thing to ask Professor Grace about when they met. Derek really could use an expert in Herbology so that he didn't have to constantly trouble his mother for confirmation as to the species of plant encountered. It was part of the Professor's job as a staff member at Hogwarts anyways right?

It was lucky of him to stumble across Gail at this point in time though. Not having to check his surroundings constantly put him in a much better frame of mind for this sort of expedition. What was even though was how she seemed to be genuinely enjoying herself! Not often did one find potential hiking friends.

"Not often. Even the more complex potions we generally stock-pile as we need them. Then again," Derek zipped and buckled the bag before standing up to pull the straps over his shoulders. "Lots of us experiment during our down-time and the successful potions eventually end up being used at St Mungo's."

He grinned at her as he began strolling again, "Some of us have come up with potions with less side-effects or greater potency or even new concoctions entirely! It's brilliant being able to work with people who really do want to help. My boss does sometimes tell us to stop blowing ourselves up but I think that's just her way of encouraging us."

"What about Wolfsbane?" She couldn't help that it rolled off her tongue like she was discussing the menu at her favorite restaurant. She kept a few paces behind once she had asked, afraid she might make him uncomfortable if she, a werewolf, didn't give him his space.

There was a reason why she chose to go out on far away trips during the full moon, rather than rely on Wolfsbane potion. For one, it was expensive, since only the most talented of potion brewers could craft it. There was also the matter of the taste, and the horrible itch she always got when she did use it. The biggest problem on the list though, was that, if made incorrectly, if it had the tiniest mistake, Wolfsbane could be poison in her mouth. She didn't know any potion brewer personally, and her trust in people required that she know them. For all she knew, her supplier could have some personal vendetta against people like her, intending harm on her and anyone with the same condition as her. It was just so risky in so many ways.

"Hmm," he frowned as he tried to remember if any of Zach's trials had gone well when he was into trying out variations of potions for werewolves and vampires when he had finished watching some supernatural muggle films. The two of them had worked together on that actually. It was a ton of fun but they had to stop eventually because they couldn't find many werewolves or vampires who would willingly try their potions. To be honest, they were lucky they had managed to find any willing participants at all.

"We brew Wolfsbane and keep them in stock ourselves. A while back I had a small project working on it with another Healer actually! The taste apparently didn't improve or anything, but the time needed for it to take effect is much shorter than it used to be."
That was probably one of the reasons he had moved from assistant Healer to Healer within the span of only a year or two. When in ER, the last thing that they needed while treating werewolves - newly made or otherwise - was to have to restrain them from hurting themselves and those around them.

"Do you do social work with werewolves?" Derek craned his neck around to look at her. Gail's question about the Wolfsbane potion had been oddly specific. When into potions, most people asked about cures for dark magic and love potions gone wrong. If she was in contact with any werewolves, maybe he could owl Zach and start playing around with potions again! Derek brightened up considerably at the thought, and hurriedly turned to face her, an excited grin growing over his face.
"Could you put me in contact with anyone? Last time my partner and I were able to work with someone, we made amazing progress!"

Her eyes widened as Derek turned on her, though with a look of excitement rather than suspicion. "Well, no, I don't do any social work actually," truth be told, she wasn't even sure what that entailed, it wasn't like she'd ever heard the term before. She looked up at him, believing he was genuinely interested in the possibility, and she hesitated. Then, when that smile reappeared on her face, she said, "Lemme start over," She extended a hand to him, "My name is Gail Rimmell, I am a wandering witch, and I am also a werewolf."

From what he said, she had no reason to think he would react poorly to the new found werewolf in front of her, but as a creature of habit, Gail still had the thought in her mind.
