Sayla Axelsen sat outside in the corridor, watching the people walk by her innocuously as she herself cracked open a Potions textbook to a chapter on dragons and their body parts used as ingredients. The only interesting part, however, seemed to be how terribly they were treated aside from a small paragraph about how dragon's heart created the most powerful dark curses and yet also the best cures for just about any illnesses.

For a bit, it almost seemed as if Sayla was studying dragons, their anatomy and the uses of their body parts for potion-making. It all was fairly complicated and rather unethical, enough to the point that her interest and her eyes were wandering. They sparkled as they finally found someone interesting wandering into the potions classroom.

"... Target acquired," she remarked with a michevious grin as she closed her book, put it in her book bag and followed after the young boy. He was a bit cute, and he seemed very hardworking by how he had decided to spend his time studying in a silent classroom devoid of anything but an old, dusty, erudite atmosphere.

Cracking the door open a bit, she cupped her hand over her right eye and peered intensely through the crack. In the meanwhile, Sayla put all her effort to looking as inconspicious as possible. That seemed like an impossible task, but it wasn't a tall order for her to keep mum as a mouse, thankfully.

Jackson reached the bottom of the page and realized he'd let his mind wander, he didn't remember anything he'd just read. He sighed loudly. Not only did he read slower than the other kids, now he had to reread the last page or more. He stretched his fingers and went to the previous page, determined to pay attention this time.

Carefully, Sayla opened the door just enough so that she could slip through, the door softly rustling but hopefully not too much to bother Jackson. Then she walked by him just as quietly, seemingly innocuous, despite a mischievous glint in her eye. Trying her hardest to keep a straight face and avoid making noises, she sat down, and took out her copy of Magical Draft and Potions, pretending to read the fourth chapter.

However, she was not particularly interested, and because there were so few people within the room, the Gryffindor student stopped reading and leaned forward slightly before looking at Jackson from behind, reading the passage he was reading before smiling and looking at him. Carefully retreating for a bit, Sayla went back to her textbook, searching for the passage he had been reading, out of interest in what the fourth (or was he a fifth year) year students were doing at this time of the year.

Once she had found it, she skimmed through the pages quickly before actually beginning to read it thoroughly -- that is, until she became bored. For a little bit, though, Sayla persisted until she had finished the chapter. Breathing deeply, an internal dialogue transpired within her head: almost a Q&A session, as she tried to retain the information. Now this was much more interesting than dragons which you couldn't even get near! Still, she was here on a mission! Quickly, she returned to watching over Jackson silently, fairly pleased he couldn't even tell she was there.

Jackson vaguely noted someone sitting behind him, but it was simply an errant thought as he tried to remember what the different ingredients did.
"Armadillo bile, smart potions. Ashwinder eggs, very hot, love potions, cures fever. Asphodel, ay kay ay Royal Staff, sleep related potions." He recited under his breath. He stretched his fingers again and flipped to the next page. He sighed loudly, frustrated at how large braille was compared to print books, and how long it took to read. He stretched his fingers more as he tried to work up the motivation to continue reading.

Perhaps she had assumed too much. Sayla Axelsen really didn't know if he noticed her but to be honest, whether he did or not was just as errant a thought as him knowing she was behind him. Anyway, that didn't matter. She read along as Jackson recited the various lines in the textbook, not so much interested in the content as she was in hearing his voice as he spoke.

What a lovely voice he has, the first year thought, before noting the large braile book he had used. It was without a doubt the same textbook she herself was using, but she didn't know how to read braile to tell for sure. Still, details, details, details! What good were they when there were so many other interesting things to take note of~?

Watching him read, Sayla quietly wondered when he was going to finish, thumbing a lock of straight raven black hair that had fallen out of her ponytail. Doing her best to pay attention, Sayla occupied her other hand as well so to not have it disturb her nor Jackson when flipping to the page. Somewhat, this was boring; Sayla could have easily found herself somewhere else by now. But look at the luck she had -- a blind student, of all the people she could have come across! His impediment wasn't too much of one in the first place, and so far it did not detract from how entertaining the Hufflepuff could be.

"Hee hee~..." The sound was eerie but sweet, like a peal of silver bells ringing in a deserted winter wonderland. With a small smile, she said, "Oops." Even though she had made some noise, she did her best to subdue it so that it did not bother the boy in front of her. It would be rather poor of her to make a bad impression on him already.

Jackson turned round when he heard a girl giggle, then say 'oops'. So that was who had sat behind him.
"Look, I don't mind you being there, but if you're just gonna laugh at the blind kid you can leave, thank you." He frowned, pushing his bangs aside, hoping his eyes would freak out whoever was laughing at him. Probably a Slytherin, though there had been Gryffindors who made fun of him.

Oh, he noticed her? Well, she supposed that she really was too loud. "But I wasn't laughing at you, dear! You're just much more interesting than all the others, and I'm more than delighted!" she replied brightly, her enthusiasm truly genuine.

"Why would I leave when you're the most interesting person I've met here? It doesn't make any sense! It's not because you're blind or your beautiful eyes though -- it's because you're different from all the others. I don't know you well at all but there's more to the eye when it comes to someone like you. I can't just look at you all the time though."

Was it really that hard to believe that she was laughing out of how much he enjoyed being around him? But all he did was read a boring Potions book in Braile! Even so, he had more dedication than most of the students -- even for a Hufflepuff student, judging by his study habits -- and whatever reason there was for it, she wanted to be around people like him. The best way to attain a certain characteristic was to be surrounded by people who had those kinds of traits. It was as simple as pie. Well, then, why didn't Sayla just go hang out with a bunch of Ravenclaws? To be honest, most of the Ravenclaws in Sayla's class were a bit snooty, intimidating. To some extent she was afraid of talking to them because none of them seemed willing to be her friend, but was that because she was afraid to make the first move?

However, it was key to focus on the subject at hand. She had to reassure Jackson that she wasn't laughing at him. It was hard for her to meet his eyes though; she always had difficulty looking at anyone's, but she did her best and she said apologetically, "If I'm too creepy or rude then I'll leave. It wasn't my intention to do anything to offend you, but it seems I've not developed enough social skills to handle myself appropriately around people who suit my fancy, so I am sorry for this inadequacy." She bowed slightly, her voice more grave and formal than before as she fingered something in her uniform's pocket, searching for something. Regardless, she could have handled herself a lot more better. As sad as it was (for Sayla only), she would not be able to indulge in some voyeurism if he wished her gaze to fixate itself on something else, and maybe she should. It was time she matured after all; although, in some respects, she was plenty mature.

Jackson listened, confused. She liked being around him? She'd only sat down not that long ago. She was the first person ever to call his eyes beautiful, not even his mum did that. How did she know he was interesting and different from all the others? Was she lying? Was she a Seer?
"Why do you use such big words? Not even the professors use words that big." Jackson asked, now grateful for the interruption to his studying. She sounded younger than him, and she didn't seem mean, at least not yet, so he let himself relax. She was probably just another student who had yet to hear of the blind kid. There were a few in every class. But she sounded kinda like those stupid classic books from the 1800s his mum liked and it made him curious.

Sayla looked Jackson over, fixating her gaze on his eyes before smirking. It seemed she was getting the hang of this eye contact thing but she was far from being as confident as she appeared. Her smile softened to a kinder one when she saw that she had confused him slightly. "Oh, um, sorry! Am I using big words? I didn't notice!" In spite of her unwillingness to make a bad impression, she flushed light pink in embarrassment and surprise.

Regaining her composure, she thought quietly for a bit before responding, "I suppose it comes naturally! It's because I read a lot, I guess, but I only read what I want to read." And it just happened to be that the books that she had read was not only interesting but were also well-written. For a moment, as she looked at him, Sayla's eyes shone brightly, restraining herself from giving out a cry of "Eureka!" "I think I found another thing that makes you special to me! It's that you don't look at me strangely or try to avoid me! Though that might be because I spoke awkwardly... Anyway, I like you because you seem to be a person with exceptionally good character. There are a lot of people at school like that but what really sets you apart is that there's something interesting about how you do even the most mundane things. It's hard to put into words though..."

Sayla stared into his eyes, searching mentally for a good way of explaining it. Could it be that he was just normal, but with a handicap? No, not at all! There was something mysterious about him! How could he have slipped her mind before? How could she have not noticed him before? That could be it, and she had to find out why! Even if there could be a perfectly normal explanation for that, all she needed to do was get to know him a bit more so she could explain what she wanted to explain properly! Quickly, Sayla bolted upright as her hand cupped itself around something, and she beamed at him. "Hold your hand out, please. I won't give you anything dangerous or anything like that. It's just a small gift. See?" In her own hand was a salt-water taffy candy that was light blue, wrapped in white translucent wrapping paper. On the back was the brand name of a candy shop nearby the train station needed to go to Hogwarts.

Here you go, little prince. A token of compensation for her inability to behave properly. It wasn't much but anything goes!

"No, I don't see." Jackson teased, smiling and holding his hand out. "And of course I don't look at you weird or avoid you, I'm blind and we only just met. And if you're talking about me studying, it's just 'cause braille takes longer to read than normal books, 'cause it has to be so big." He sighed the last sentence.

She set something into his hand, wrapped in wax-papery stuff, slightly squishy and it didn't bounce back when he squeezed it. "Candy?" He asked.

Whoops! Did she forget he was blind? What a silly girl Sayla Axelsen was! Then again, she was very much still a child, having not been at Hogwarts for very long. She still very much felt like the little girl who lived on a boat just a year ago. "Hee hee~ Good point! You're a funny little prince. I like you." She looked at him in fascination, giving a slight "Aa?" before turning to look at his book more closely. "It's hard to imagine what life would be like if everyone was blind. I would imagine that it would be somewhat more difficult in some ways but a lot easier in other ways. Then people could focus on the bigger things in life," she mused quietly to herself.

"But that's not what I'm talking about. Maybe your blindness helps you see past all the useless and drab details of life, but I don't really know what it's like to be blind so that might not be it. I think it's more subtle, something that can't be known by physical means. I think that it might just be that you're really modest and can't detect certain good traits of yours because they are painted so brightly on your back so everyone else can find them easily." Yet, Sayla knew a lot of people like that, so it might not be that exactly. Therefore, she gave the subject a little bit more thought. "Even if that's a common attribute, it still looks like you have the ability to find them yourself too and put them to good use," she ended her remarks warmly.

The first year's mouth ran dry as she spoke so she had to stop talking for a bit and smiled as Jackson took the candy. "Mmhm!" she affirmed as he took it in his hand, impulsively curling her hand up so her pointer finger stuck out prior to tapping his lips with it, urging him to eat it. Go on!

Jackson frowned when she called him a prince. She was weirder than any of the other people he'd met at Hogwarts. Possibly even weirder than the astronomy professor. Maybe she was a muggleborn who'd been homeschooled and wasn't used to talking to other kids. She seemed kind of insightful through her weirdness, though. And she seemed to honestly be trying to figure out why she liked him. Maybe she was in Ravenclaw.
Jackson instinctively recoiled and swatted her hand away when she tapped his lips.
"Um, s-sorry, you surprised me. Er, pl-please d-don't do that." Jackson stammered, grinding his teeth together as his stutter made an appearance. Great, now you're the blind kid with a stutter. He thought sarcastically. He hadn't even been talking to this girl for 5 minutes and he was overreacting at little stuff and stuttering like a toddler.

Oh, Sayla didn't really mean the nickname. He was nice enough but it was just a pet name that stuck in her head because she herself used to be called a little princess by her mother, father and tutor when she was younger. Why not use it to address someone she was fond of too? Seemed a bit weird though, didn't it? Of course it did. And she was plenty weird, and was actually on good terms with the astronomy professor when she didn't slack off.

When he recoiled and slapped her hand away, she let out a surprised squeak but quickly calmed down before apologizing quietly, "I'm sorry; I won't do it ever again." Perhaps some people didn't like surprises or to be touched. Sayla Axelsen really did need to be more careful the next time around. The Gryffindor took no notice of his stutter, thinking of it as a natural reaction. "That aside, please take my gift." All the more reason to give it to him -- without exciting him too much.

Jackson unwrapped the candy and popped it in his mouth, chewing for a few seconds. The flavour was so familiar. Also, the candy was really chewy. He finally recognized it as saltwater taffy.
"Cotton candy flavour?" He asked, uncertain, still trying to chew it.

Well, Jackson seemed to like the candy, and for a moment, Sayla was rather relieved. It was a gift after all! The purpose of a gift would be defeated if the boy didn't like it, not that he had to; it just was that people had to be considerate of what the recipients of gifts needed or wanted. Now, she doubted that Jackson wanted any candy at all. It probably came to him as a surprise, but at least he had a taste for it. The first year sighed in relief before bolting upright as she found her upperclassman asking an inquiry.

"It is! Blue raspberry, to be precise!" the younger girl chirruped jovially. It was her favorite flavor, and because she was slightly fond of the boy, she gave him the best of the pick, at least in her own opinion.

The first year beamed brightly as the student four years her senior thanked her. He really didn't have to do that; it was a gift, after all! Then Jackson asked her a question. It caused her to think quietly before giving a concise answer. "No one at all has told me about you, not even the upperclassmen, and if they did gossip about you, I'd ignore it because most of the time that stuff is mean, and I know that wouldn't be true." It was awful how horrible could everyone be so cruel to people they actually never gave a chance to speak for themselves. She supposed they did that to feel better about themselves, but if they actually had a shred of decency within them, then she was certain that they would feel bad for what they did.

Occasionally, even this Gryffindor worried about what others thought of her. That was the case when she was in elementary school. When she went to Muggle school wherever her mother worked, she had no idea what others thought of her. She was too afraid to talk to anyone else but the faculty staff, and she was so out of the loop when it came to the students that even though she knew what the students said about each other, she had no idea about what on earth they could possibly say about her. However, she was so far away that these worries dissipated like mist and would probably not come up again because that old life was not important anymore.

Jackson smiled. "Well, feel free to ask any questions you might have, I won't get offended or anything." Perhaps no-one had told her about him, but she hadn't even heard of him in passing? Maybe this girl didn't listen to gossip, but to not hear it? Though he wasn't sure what kind of gossip he'd generate. It was usually just at the beginning of the school year when word went round through the first years that there was a blind kid. She must've somehow missed it.

Well, perhaps the first year had worded herself wrong. She had eavesdropped at times to hear about people with disabilities but they didn't say his name or anything. It was just oh, there's some students in the upper grades who are deaf or blind or something and she was totally cool with that, but Sayla sort of doubted she would meet anyone like Jackson so it slipped her mind.

"My first question is how do you get around? I assume you use your other senses but, I suppose you don't just lick or smell the stuff in your surroundings, right? Do you use a cane or something? Also, does it give you an excuse to wear cool shades all the time? Oh, oh, and do you see things when you dream? If you took LSD, would you have visual hallucinations? Ah, sorry! Maybe I should ask things one thing at the time!" she suggested, eager to have an interesting conversation with an interesting person.

Jackson laughed as she rattled off questions. "It's fine, it's fine. I do have a cane, and I get around by listening and bumping into stuff. Though sniffing does help to find the kitchen." He grinned, pulling his cane out of his pocket and letting it unfold. "As for dreaming, it's just sounds and smells and sensations and stuff. My doctor says only people who have been blinded later in life see stuff in their dreams, my brain doesn't know how to imagine it. So I don't think I could hallucinate seeing stuff, and I'd rather not find out." He chuckled, all he knew about hallucinations was that sometimes they were nice and sometimes they were super scary. And if you had them without taking drugs then you'd have to take meds. "My mum wants me to wear sunglasses whenever it's sunny out but I always forget, so I only really wear them in the summer."
The girl was probably halfblood, to know about canes and the like, but seemed uneducated about blind people beyond knowing about that. He'd figured he'd heard just about all there was to hear from strangers about his disability, and then she said she figured he didn't lick the walls. He'd have to remember that.

The moment Jackson had surrendered himself to Sayla Axelsen's unquenchable thirst for knowledge, the first year would take full advantage of it. She was such a child, but it was also very much ingrained in her own nature. She was the most curious about his dreams, but the first year astutely found that hallucinations might be a sensitive though not sore subject. Plus, it was not school appropriate so it was best she took care to actually not get in trouble for it. For Sayla, it was a little bit surprising that Jackson had the patience to talk to her. She was a bit worried that she might be too annoying or intrigued for her own sake, but hopefully she was not in the end.

"How do you avoid getting hurt? What's in your dreams? Your cane is super cool, but I once heard from my dad that he met an old man who was also blind. He had a cane so big he could hide a katana in it, and he did. Would you get a cane like that when you're older? But then how would you use it...?" the Gryffindor student inquired curiously, shooting questions at him like how a machine gun fired its rounds. "Anyway, I apologize for asking silly questions. Here's an actually serious one: have you ever wished you could have normal sight or do you prefer it this way? Why or why not?" Her mood seemed more serious than before but not as somber as it was when she had apologized for spying on him, kind of.

Empty Classroom Empty

"Well, my cane helps me avoid getting hurt." Jackson explained, smiling. "I hold it in front of me, so if it runs into something, I know there's a wall or something there, usually based on the sound it makes if it's quiet enough. If it drops, I know there's stairs going down, so I have to be careful."

He thought about the katana question. It obviously wouldn't be a collapsible cane... "I don't know if a cane like mine could hold a katana, since those are curved, but I might ask a wandmaker if they could make me a cane that's also a wand some day when I save up enough money.

As to if I could see, this is what I'm used to, I can't imagine it any other way." He shrugged. "If you're asking if I could find a spell right now to make me able to see, I probably wouldn't use it. I don't know if my brain would be able to handle it and I'd have to relearn reading and stuff. If you're asking if I wish I was born able to see, it changes. Today's been a good day, so probably not. I like my friends and how nice they are, I like my life so far, I don't want to change it." He rattled off the last bit with practiced ease. Lots and lots of folks wanted to know if he wanted to be able to see, but he literally didn't know what he was missing, so he didn't much care. Plus, he couldn't, so wishing just wasted time.
