For Peace of Mind (Tag: Shadow) Empty

The corner of the room was dark.

Mystery found herself folded into one of them, a thick book straggling between her fingertips. The divinations room was being unused, as it was the weekend. It created an odd air of loneliness, of a solitary sense. The curtains hung heavily all around the room, looming overhead and blocking out the sunlight. The fabric could keep a person warm, yes, but without such a body in the room, it became cold.

She was at peace.

Without a soul to bother her, quite literally at that, there was no distraction or control over her emotions. She didn’t have to feel what everyone else felt. Didn’t have to feel attacked by the one thing most couldn’t control.

She flipped the page in her book. A divinations book, to go with her setting. It was one of her strengths, but the only strength she found to be interesting. She didn’t love divinations because she believed it, she didn’t feel that it was such a hard truth as some, but she felt that there was something to learn from it. About it. Divinations had always been like an unanswered question.

Mystery continued to flip through the pages in the book, her body tucked away in a corner, just in case someone were to arrive.

From what Shadow could tell, the weather was quite pleasant today. The common room, as well as the halls around the castle seemed for the most part vacant of most of his classmates. They must have all gone out to enjoy the fresh air outside while they had the free time before eventually having to return to their studies. Shadow couldn't say he could experience the sunny day like the others surely were right now, but he took advantage of it in his own way. He enjoyed the peace and quiet of the castle on days like this, and ordinarily he would find a pleasant spot to sit and sketch, but today he decided to check on his younger sister, Mystery.

With his ability to shadow cross, or in other words, to sink into the shadows and appear elsewhere, similar to apparition, Shadow found it easy to get around the castle as he pleased. Shadow-crossing of course was dangerous for most vampires, but Shadow had been born with a natural apt for it, and never required lessons to achieve it. It was for this reason that he had such an odd name in the first place, just as each of his brothers, sisters, and cousins were named after their special strengths. Of course as he was meant to keep the truth about how he was a vampire a secret, he really should have been more discreet about shadow-crossing at school, but was the most natural way for him to get around. Having to walk everywhere he needed to be was far too restricting; it was like asking someone to hop on one foot rather than use both their legs. Still, he tried to be cautious where he could. Right now, for instant, he turned a corner in the corridor and found a closet to step into so no student would see him shadow-cross. Shadow still didn't have as much freedom here as he did back at Grace manor; not only did he have to keep his abilities hidden, he also found the many open windows around the school restricting. Back home, all the curtains were shut throughout the manor, allowing no sunlight to break through; he was a prisoner to the light, as he wandered the dark halls he called home. As he entered this closet and shut the door, it was dark enough that he could sink into the shadows and cross over to where his sister was.

'Mystery.' Another ability each Grace shared due to their vampire heritage: their minds shared a link with those close to them. Due to the strong bond he shared with his sister, it was simple to sense her location in the Astronomy Tower. He appeared behind a curtain on one end of the room and he paused, making sure there were no other students in the room before he stepped out and walked over to Mystery, who was sitting in a corner with a book. He slipped his hands into his jean pockets and leaned against the nearest table.

Throughout their years at Hogwarts, Mystery and Shadow were inseparable, but Shadow had grown distant over these last few weeks. He was in his 7th year now, and soon he would be graduating. While this in itself was good news, there was also the matter of leaving Mystery on her own for her last two years at Hogwarts. Like all of the members of the Grace family, Mystery had her own gifts, but like the rest of the family, himself included, her gift was also a curse, which made it difficult for her to be around the other students. He had been a sort of rock to her throughout the years, and he felt heartless for doing so, but now he felt as though he had only made things worse for her. When he should have been helping her to cope with her abilities, he selfishly shielded her instead, and what was she to do now, once he was gone?

For Peace of Mind (Tag: Shadow) Empty
PostSubject: Re: For Peace of Mind (Tag: Shadow)   For Peace of Mind (Tag: Shadow) EmptyTue Jul 12, 2016 4:10 pm

Mystery saw her brother before he entered her mind, a communication that had been within their blood, within their family, for as long as they could recount. It allowed them such an ease of communication, a privacy of sorts that not many people could find. It was hard to alter one’s thoughts, so perhaps that made them the most honest people any witch, wizard, or what have you could confront. Family was family, after all.

It was the subtlety of his emotions that drew Mystery’s attention. Dulled down as they were, she could find a faint spoke creeping over the pages of her book. A dulled, black thing it was, sluggish in nature and it examined Mystery from atop of the pages that sat in her hands, yet it moved no further. Mystery turned the page in her book as Shadow spoke to her, to only her, calling her name in the silence of her own mind, of a space secure for only them. Something so personal, and yet…the black smoke sat, staring at her, telling her otherwise.

For the longest of moment’s she didn’t respond. She had no words for her brother, though it wasn’t often that Mystery had words for many. She kept to herself, having separated herself from the chaos of beings. The joys, the woes, they had been to much for Mystery to handle. She could not cope with what others felt, and had concluded that others must have been able to only through their own ignorance of self. She was certain that she was born to be alone, and with Shadow leaving, she was assured of her own hypothesis, one that she would have denied just a year ago.

Flipping another page in her book, Mystery reached then end of the chapter. She felt that she could no longer wait to respond to Shadow. Between her own longing to love her brother and her confliction of his intended separation, Mystery felt her own grief fighting to bring forth her doubts and yet to simply love her brother as she always had. As she looked up, silently eyeing her brother, she could still see a wall. One that had only recently appeared.

'Yes?' Her response was simple and to the point, as she always had been. She thought there was little need for so many words to express something that could be otherwise conveyed in far less time. Though, of course, words created tone, and tone implied emotion. Mystery hadn’t needed such a thing to understand what those around her were feeling, and so she had never found reason for such long winded sentences.
